Overview
Mama Cash is the oldest international women's fund in the world, founded in the Netherlands in 1983. Mama Cash is a grant-making organisation that supports women, girls, and trans and intersex people who fight for their rights.
Economies at all levels rely on women’s labour, especially care work, and yet its devaluation is a key cause and a consequence of gender inequality. Women’s provision of unpaid care has not been challenged by many activist groups because it is a social norm embedded in most societies. Care, as an issue, is starting to see an increase in funding, but the majority of funding goes to large, generalist organisations, most often not led by women.
To change that
- funding needs to flow to feminist movements and women’s rights organisations (WROs); and
- those WROs need extra support to understand how unpaid care relates to their core priorities so they can include related issues on their agendas.
Our funding will support Mama Cash’s work on women’s unpaid care and support them to strengthen the capacity of women-led groups advancing economic justice.
