Overview
WattTime is an environmental tech non-profit that serves as the secretariat of Climate TRACE, a global non-profit coalition of organisations that harnesses remote sensing and artificial intelligence to track greenhouse gas emissions. Climate TRACE has built the first globally comprehensive, timely, open and freely accessible greenhouse gas data inventory, covering more than 660 million individual assets across 60 sectors.
Despite significant gains across the climate movement, progress towards net zero is still slow, with emissions continuing to rise. The poor availability and quality of emissions data on companies are often cited as a barrier to investor action on climate. However, recent technology advancements are changing this. Remote sensing, artificial intelligence and applied data science now make it possible to generate independent emissions data at a higher resolution both geospatially and temporally to complement the data reported through corporate disclosures.
Our grant to WattTime supports Climate TRACE to further develop its independent inventory of high-quality greenhouse gas emissions data. In addition to expanding ownership data to link real-world assets to their corporate owners, operators, or value chain partners, our funding also supports Climate TRACE in developing case studies and tools to facilitate the use of emissions data to accelerate decarbonisation.
