The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is a global community of over 225 leading businesses driving systems transformation for a better world, transforming the systems we work in to limit the impact of the climate crisis, restore nature and tackle inequality.

Overview

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is a global not-for-profit membership organisation focused on limiting the climate crisis, restoring nature and tackling inequality. WBCSD’s mission is for all people to thrive within planetary boundaries by 2050.

Avoided emissions occur outside a company’s value chain. The term captures the positive impact of climate solutions as it aims to measure the greenhouse gases not emitted – or ‘avoided’ – by comparing it to the most likely high-emission reference scenario. For example, providing energy through wind turbines compared to burning fossil fuels for energy generation. Presently, the lack of a high-quality, robust standardized approach for calculating avoided emissions is hindering the flow of capital to climate solutions.

Our grant supports WBCSD to strengthen the current Guidance on Avoided Emissions, and to expand sector-specific case studies and its application by industry and investors. Our grant further supports the integration of Avoided Emissions into the GHG Protocol that is co-hosted by WBCSD and the World Resources Institute (WRI). The Guidance on Avoided Emissions serves as an implementable knowledge base for the development of a high-integrity standardized approach, following the multi-stakeholder approach of GHG Protocol that is steered by an independent Governance and Technical Working Groups. We envision eliminating the friction caused by competing approaches, unlocking financial flows to climate solutions, and preventing greenwashing.
